the influence of edgar allan poe on music
“it is on his tales, and on his poems yet more decidedly, that the reputation of mr. poe must stand; and both, in their line and manner, are inimitable.”
propunds george rex graham who is a famous journalist of the united states.in other way, he indicates the word “inimitable” as the identification mark of the great artist’s visionary which imposes the artists all over the world in style and manner.his influence is so strong that he turns into a muse impressing the artists even out of his branch literature.poe guides his many succesors such as the best-seller book the dante club’s author matthew pearl who mentions in his column written up for the guardian.
"edgar allan poe is a writer who claimed to have taken little influence from writers who came before him, but whose own influence on literature and culture has been endless. he is traditionally credited with almost single-handedly inventing the genres of fantasy, science fiction and mystery. yet poe's work has seeped into our consciousness in more subtle ways. indeed, some writers - ts eliot and el doctorow included - would say that poe has had an impact on our world out of proportion to his actual talent as a writer. judge those claims by reading poe's own work, but revel in poe's never-ending influence and resonance by picking up a few of these. poe seems to have at least one consistent effect on writers: he makes them react."
as pearl supports, it can be claimed that “his never ending influence” is the key factor that enables artists (from directors to composers) put talisman of edgar allan poe no matter whatever era they crave for creating something artistic.as scott peeples mentions on his book ‘the afterlife of edgar allan poe’, his death has become a grief on the people who is in his reach.
“the poet was known personally or by reputation all his country; he has readers in england, and in several of the states of continental europe; but he had few or no friends; and the regrets of his death will be suggested principally by the consideration that in him literary art lost one of its most brilliant and erratic stars.”
such compliments from the elite critics of the states proves that his brilliance is enough to impress his successors, despite their different artistic choice. these works can be examplified in cinema such as the tell-tale heart directed by ernest morris© and murders in the rue morgue© by gordon hessler starring jason raboards and herbert lom.as regards the animation the cask of amontillado is a brickfilm (a technique that legos are used) created by logan wright©.
such works can be multiplied as the examples of poe’s influence on popular culture. however, as an author his influence of modern music seems huge compared to other branches of art. also, he is a unique artist whose his poems and short stories are composed both and his influence enables musicians to refer to his famous works.
rather than tracks, poe’s works as a whole seem to be concept album titled tales of mystery and imagination by the progressive rock band the alan parsons project. in this concept album, track-listing is lined up below:

in 1994, michael romeo, who is the guitarist of successful symphonic metal band symphony x, releases an album named the dark chapter and places two tracks influenced by poe’s works such as the cask of amantilado and masque of the read death of the same title.
as denoted above, poe’s both poems and short stories are retold and referred in many songs by many musicians. for instance, annabel lee is a famous poem of edgar allan poe thematised the death of a beautiful lady, as it is indicated in the final lines;
•
and so, all the night-tide, i lie down by the side
of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride,
in her sepulchre there by the sea--
in her tomb by the side of the sea.
this poem is composed and retold by many musicians and bands such as american folk singer frankie lane, spanish band radio futura in spanish langauge and californian fusion band called tiger army.
poe’s another well-known poem called alone is a work which can be a reflection of his depressed life and counted as his autobiography in the form of poetry.as poe’s says:
•
from childhood's hour i have not beeas others were -- i have not seen
as others saw -- i could not bring
my passions from a common spring –
it is clearly understood that he has disappointments since his first years. undoubtedly, this work attracted many musicians and most of the bands and composers have transform the poem like norwegian avant-garde metal band on their 1997-released album called la masquarade infernale.
poe’s ‘the raven’ is supposed to be one his masterpieces. the narrative poem indicates how edgar allan poe is successful in the sub-genre of poetry called dark romanticism. even the choice of raven as a metaphor obviously show the mystery included in the work on its own.
differed from two poems that is analysed above, the raven influences the musicians both in retelling and referring
