Found a possible second solution to those getting White screen and ctd when trying to choose their navies. This is copied directly from the Official Total war forum:

1. Select a ship that does not cause a crash. Or build one.
2. Merge this with the fleet that causes the crash.

The merged fleet will be automatically selected, and can then be moved or split up again, at least for me. I haven't tried this at port, or with a full stack navy (where the swap screen is brought up instead of automatically merging) but I hope this helps some people until a patch comes that will hopefully fix this issue.

Further discussion at that thread revealed that this worked for most people, as long as it was something like a sloop as only ships gotten later due to research seemed to cause this bug, like 1,2,3 and 4th raters from what I heard so far.

Of course, this wont solve my navy problems in the long run but if you have navies with good, or your best like me, Land armies aboard then this should at least let people get them ashore ^^.

Also, I havent had time to try this myself yet... I was on the way with sloops to america to try it but my forced got attacked by a pirateforce while stuck, being outnumbered more then 2-1 and won .
Seems the mass of enemy ship became more of an obstacle then aid when he attacked. Anyway... this attack also "unstuck" my navy when I won over them and captured a few of them. So I guess getting attacked by pirate and capturing some of them might yet be another way to avoid the CtD when trying to move navies too
