OK,I'm not a fanboy of any of those franchises, but I see people saying "I'll play PES" so easily. So, I'll make a what's better, what's worse list, but be warned, I'll bash PES pretty hard.
What's Better
Everything presentation wise, there are more faces, and prime players' faces are all there, and really realistic. There are more real faces. The cutscenes are better, amazing details there, there are security guys and so near the pitch, and they move. The subs bench is always full, and even though not licensed, the managers are also there. (licensing them would be difficult as they change a lot) The celebrations are amazing, they are realistic and the importance of goals really matters. If you score a goal to make it 1-6, there won't be much cheer, but if you make it 2-1 in the 90th minute, it's going to be an all out celebration, with sometimes, subs included. Also, the licenced Champions League, Euro League and Libertadores is a plus. And the tactics screen is plain awesome, it's really easy to set tactics and change players' positions and roles. It's really flowing, and usable in online. You can make asymmetric formations real easy. (like Pedro LW, Messi CF and Sanchez RF) The tactics are really amazing, easy to use and functional.
What's Worse
The lack of licences, but if you are patient, you can patch it.
THE GAMEPLAY. It's really atrocious. The defenders are still brainless, it's so easy to get past them. You just have to run. And when you get past them, you don't know why. For example, when I get past a defender in FIFA, I can see why. He made a move and I pulled the ball, or the ball went between the legs, or I overpowered him, etc. But in PES, one second, the defender is in my way, in a perfect position to tackle, the next second, I'm past him, I don't know how. Some people say scoring is hard. Yes, scoring one on one with the keeper is hard. I made 4 matches against my friend, and the only time I scored a one on one situation was a glitched one. But I scored three goals form more than 35 meters, one from Gerrard, one from van Bommel and one from Matuidi. Also, crossing is even sweatier than FIFA. Pressing the cross button twice makes you do a good cross, which you mostly score. Really, it's not the near post, it's a good cross. If you press it once, makes a bad cross. Also, defence affects the shots a lot. OK, the defender may affect the balance of the player a little, but they just make the player unable to shoot, even top players.
The rosters are another problem. I don't know what they did in the updates, but the initial teams are last year's. Seriously. Meireles, Joe Cole, OH MY GOD POULSEN on Liverpool's line up. Stancu, Culio, Pino, Sarp, Arda in Galatasaray's. I wouldn't be surprised if I saw Ibra in Barça or Torres in Liverpool, it's unbelievable.
And the ratings are plain funny. They were funny the last year, Piqué was 83 and Gabriel Milito was 88 in PES 2011. But this year is also funny. There are SO many players over 90. Evra is 80 and Clichy is 87. Suarez is 77 and Carroll is a 80. I didn't experiment with most teams, as I was disgusted, but seriously, mostly the ratings are funny. We sometimes complain saying "Koscielny is 78! He has to be 80!". Imagine what we would say if we were PES gamers.
So,in conclusion, think twice before saying "I'll play PES this year". Think really hard.
I'm not a fanboy, I think PES 2011 was a worthy opponent for FIFA, but 2012 is a joke. If PES was better, I would also say so.
