Back in 2007, I took a trip to Europe. While I was at Sweden, I met a fellow traveler. She was the closest thing to my idea of a perfect woman, physically at least. Black hair, white skin, eyes I could describe as "green-ish blue", and a smile so warm that it practically melted me. She was wearing a beige sweater and a brown skirt, with little black boots. All those were huge turn-ons for me, so it didn't take long for me to fall for her.
I was at a bar, alone, hoping to relax, alone with my drink. But as soon as I saw her, I knew that wouldn't be the case. I wasn't exactly a ladies man, I was 28, yet I hadn't have any serious relationships before. The only time I ever hooked up with a girl was 4 years ago, I couldn't get any job, my mother was fighting with a dreadful disease (she fully recovered later, before y'all ask), and my brother was going through a divorce (it was his fault). So I hit a bar, kept drinking while spilling my beans to the bartender there, and we ended up together. I don't remember the details and I didn't enjoy it to be honest. But I was sure this was going to be different.
I sat next to her, and said "Hi." I could try a lame and overused pick-up line, but no, I wanted to be all me around her. She responded with a huge smile.
"Look," I said, "I know you probably think I'm here to hit on you, but that's not true. I can hardly think about hitting on anyone right now."
"Oh, OK," she said, looking a bit surprised, not knowing where I'm going with this. I didn't know it either.
"I guess I came here because I have problems," I said. "A good way to forget how awful life is. Here you can drown your sorrows, talk to a bartender who pretends to give a fuck, and sweep everything under a rug."
I wasn't particularly depressed at that moment, actually. It made me uncomfortable to be lying to her, but I didn't know any other way.
"Well, you can talk to me," she said, "I'll pretend to listen."
I won't bore y'all with details, I told her about my mom's disease and my brother's divorce. Technically I wasn't lying. My wounded gazelle gambit worked, and we talked until the bar closed. I got to know her. Her name was Kristine, she was Latvian, and on a trip across Europe just like me. She was three years younger than moi, a history graduate pursuing higher studies. She had been saving money for years for this trip. When she asked me what was I doing here when my mom was ill back in my country, I told that everything was too much to handle and I needed a long break. She probably had her doubts but didn't question further.
When the bar was closed, we returned to our separate hotels, but met again tomorrow. It was her last day in Sweden, so I needed to act quick if I wanted to keep her in my life after this.
We went to a sightseeing tour, during that time we kept talking, got to know each other better, flirted a bit. At the end of the day, I finally gave in and confessed my love to her. She was shocked, flattered but rejected me nonetheless. There was no way we could have a serious relationship. But I wasn't going to give up. She wasn't flat-out rejecting me, if that was the case, I would suck it up and try to move on.
"Well, that's not entirely wrong," I said. "But whatever the problem is, I'm willing to fight it. Knowing each other for two days? Even two days were enough to make me realise how awesome you are. Long distance? We have Skype. Cultural differences? I won't force you to change anything, and I'm willing to change if I have to. Look, this might be a mistake, but that's a mistake I wanna do. So please, do it with me."
... and she said yes. Now this feels like a sappy rom-com ending, but in reality things didn't work out that way. We lived far away from each other for 4 years, in the meantime I learnt Latvian. At some point we finally lost contact, essentially breaking up. She didn't have Facebook until 2013, and when I found her, her relationship status read "Engaged to blah blah". It was there for a few months. When I saw that she was single, I added her. I was talking to her in Latvian now. We eventually rebooted our relationship, it was long distance until March 2015, when I moved to Latvia to live with her. As of August, we're engaged. I'll make sure it ends with a marriage this time.
