Charles Darwin was the first to formulate a scientific argument for the theory of evolution by means of natural selection. Evolution by natural selection is a process that is inferred from three facts about populations: 1) more offspring are produced than can possibly survive, 2) traits vary among individuals, leading to different rates of survival and reproduction, and 3) trait differences are heritable. Thus, when members of a population die they are replaced by the progeny of parents that were better adapted to survive and reproduce in the environment in which natural selection took place. This process creates and preserves traits that are seemingly fitted for the functional roles they perform. Natural selection is the only known cause of adaptation, but not the only known cause of evolution. Other, nonadaptive causes of evolution include mutation and genetic drift.

物種起源的第一本中文版由馬君武翻譯，與較早期的日语版本同用現在通行的“進化”一詞，有學者認爲來源是和製漢語。早於達爾文逝世不久，中文上用「進化論」是一致的，例如孫中山曾在著作中盛讚該論。除了台灣之外，「進化」一詞沿用至今。台灣的學者、政府機構、教科書等也一向沿用「進化論」。近年台湾教育部卻更改課本，以「演化論」代替，從此新舊學生也混淆，不知道是同一套還是兩套理論
根據台灣教育部所編輯的辭典，「進化」定義為生物由低級到高級、由簡單到複雜的發展過程，並將「退化」定義為進化的反義詞。而「演化」則定義為生物物種為了因應時空的嬗變，而在形態和與行為上與遠祖有所差異的現象
