Thinking only defensively seems to stem from some sort of perceived weakness. The idea that an individual only possesses enough ability to "defend" and not to "attack". This lack of decisiveness makes it much more difficult for an individual to determine their own fate. If a person refuses to push forward, they can not expect to make any headway in their lives and are doomed to continuously fight to maintain their current position in the world, never to reach anything better.
