in the third place, there is today the added phenomenon. particularly among youth, of those who draw undemployment or supplementary benefits but who do part-time work for cas (on which they pay no taxes). They might well prefer to have full-time iteadt jobs, but for them unemployment is not the same serious problem that it was for the unemployed worker of the 1930s who usally had no means of earning extra income and who did not receive anythink like the benefits that are available todat to those witgout a job.

In the fourth place, experinces of undemployment are becoming much longer in duration. In the 1950 and 1960s the typical unemployed person was with out a job for a fairly short period of time. In thelate 1970s and the 1980s the average duration of a period of unemployment-the time between losing a job and finding a new one- increased significantly. Long term bouts of unemployment are particularly upsetting to those who experince them. Also ,the longer a person is unemployed the more difficult it becomes to re-enter the employed labour force.
