    Overdependence on Technology Curbs Creativity
According to recent reports, overdependence on the internet and its search engines is
damaging brains in a big way. Skills are going for a toss (like learning maths in case of
children) and the ability to store information in the mind is also being affected adversely.
    Cause for alarm, isn‟t it?
Ujjayanta Chakraborty, a college student, shares, “Strangely, if people hide their birthdays on
social networking sites, friends who forget to wish them blame the birthday boy or girl for
doing so! That‟s how much people have become dependent on the internet today.”
Film director Onir puts it this way, “It‟s true that people today are too preoccupied with other
things and don‟t appreciate or remember the beauty of things that they would even a decade
ago. The problem is that they tend to indulge in a lot of unproductive activity on the internet.
For instance, why would you want to read about actors and actresses for hours, no matter how
popular they are? Is that going to help you in any way? Earlier, one would use phones just for
calling but today, it‟s all about multi-tasking and one wonders whether people remember what
the primary function of their phones is!”
Paramita Sur, a school teacher, says, “The sad part is that students don‟t have the time to think
of creative ideas, because they are so addicted to the internet and gadgets.”
Taking a holistic view, noted psychiatrist Hansal Bhachech says, “When you are spending a
lot of time on the internet, your attention span automatically goes down because you are
concentrating on several windows/sites at the same time. Today, people are so used to the
virtual world that they are an impatient lot and can‟t tolerate even a slow connection! It makes
you restless and irritated the moment something goes wrong. There is no „motivated
remembering‟ these days because people set alerts on their mobiles or e-mail accounts for
occasions like birthdays or anniversaries. Earlier, in simpler times, people would start
thinking well in advance about how to surprise their near and dear ones on special days.
Today, since they require a pop-up or alarm to remember occasions, the emotional attachment
isn‟t quite the same and the kind of involvement which was prevalent earlier is no longer
    there.”
It would do no harm to take a break from the tech trance and try and retain a few good old
    world habits.
